This is an exciting opportunity that will offer students the chance to improve their negotiating skills and will be of great benefit to any students looking to read law at university or ultimately land a career in the legal sector..

What is a negotiation competition?

The negotiation competition will run as an extra-curricular activity that offers students the chance to practice and improve their negotiation skills in a legal context. The competition involves multiple rounds where teams of students go head to head negotiating either a transaction, the resolution of a dispute or the settlement of a divorce. Each team of students will be required to research relevant areas of law before planning and formulating complex arguments. Each stage of the competition will be impartially judged by a legal specialist, who will provide detailed feedback to all participants.

What are the benefits of running a negotiation competition?

A negotiation competition offers a vast array of benefits to all students, regardless of whether they wish to enter a career in law. At the very heart of the competition is the desire to encourage students to think independently and critically about complex issues before encouraging them to build upon their presentation, debating and negotiating skills. Harnessing these skills will be of great benefit to students not only through their academic life, but also when they enter the work environment.

For those students who do wish to enter a career in law, however, taking part in a negotiation competition is an excellent opportunity that will offer them an insight into legal practice. Excellent negotiation skills are vital for any prospective legal specialist as in reality, most disputes are not taken to court but are instead settled through some form of mediation whereby negotiation plays key role. Furthermore, lawyers and solicitors are often instructed to give advice on different areas of business and are responsible for ensuring their clients receive the best deal possible - this can only be done through expert negotiation.

Learning the skills involved in negotiating has now become important for any prospective legal specialist. Many law schools across England and Wales have begun to run workshops and extra-curricular activities to ensure all law students gain experience and an understanding of the principles of negotiating. It is for this reason that any student who has prior negotiation experience will have an advantage when applying to read law at university.

Assessment

The judges will assess each team of students on five key areas:

Team work

The judge will be looking to see how well the team worked together and assess how well tasks were delegated across team members. Teams will also be judged on how well each person contributes and how well members are able to support each other during the negotiation period.

Quality

The judge will be assessing how well each team member attempts to negotiate the best deal for their client. There will be particular focus on the strength of the arguments being presented, the use of legal language and how well students manage the relationship with opposing team members during the negotiation.

Professionalism & Ethics.

The judge will be looking to see how ethically and professionally team members conduct themselves and carry out negotiations.

Self-analysis

All participants will be required to take part in a short question and answer session which will encourage them to reflect upon their performances and think critically about how they could improve and what they have learnt.
